How To Deal With The Onset Of Depression

Depression is a disease affecting millions of people worldwide, and it is responsible for many lost work hours as well as a greatly impaired quality of life. It is a condition which has been rarely understood throughout history, and even now there is no definitive answer as to how it occurs and how it should be treated. Research has brought advancements in knowledge, but nothing which can really be termed a breakthrough in terms of preventing or curing the disease. Hormones which influence mood have been discovered, and there are also drug treatments which can at least lessen the effects of symptoms.

It can be difficult to determine when an individual is depressed in the first place. Many of the initial symptoms are similar to the types of low feelings every individual experiences from time to time. One of the most significant keys to look for, though, is any extended period of bad feeling with no apparent reason. It is obvious that someone going through a major crisis in their life is going to feel down, but when those feelings extend seemingly indefinitely long after the event has occurred, this is when there is cause for concern.

As with so many other mental and physical conditions, a depression disorder is much easier to treat when it is discovered early. Even in a situation where you are unsure as to whether there is a genuine case of depression or not, it can pay you to take some forms of corrective action. Getting more fresh air and sunshine, taking more exercise, and making sure your diet is rich in vitamins and omega 3 acids will all help to lift your mood whether you have a clinical condition or not.

Once you are certain that a depressive disorder has taken root, it is time to make sure that the patient has as much supervision as possible. This may or may not include drugs such as Prozac which even now are unproven in their effect on seriously depressed patients. One of the major reasons for this supervision is to prevent the patient from taking actions which worsen the condition, and which take the patient down into a vicious circle where the problems will continue to feed each other. Examples are cigarette smoking, drinking, and eating junk food.

Once depression has been formally diagnosed, there is nothing you can do except follow the lifestyle improvements which have been shown to have a positive effect on patients. The problem is, of course, that the patient will not feel like implementing these changes in the first place. Depressive disorders can be so much easier to treat when there are supportive family or close friends to assist and give encouragement. Failing this, joining a support group can also be a major help in fighting depression.
